Web hosting comes in different packages. VPS (Virtual Private Server) and Dedicated Server Hosting make for the two major classifications. While VPS comprises of multiple virtual servers within a single server, where each virtual server can run its own full-fledged operating system, and can even be independently rebooted; dedicated servers offer a totally different experience, and hence is more suited to mid or large sized business entities, considering the amount of data that is handled. With dedicated servers in place, one enjoys a greater degree of security, functionality, availability, and flexibility. But all this comes at a price. So while the user of a dedicated server owns the entire actual server, the one using a VPS server own his own little domain of influence.

In case of a VPS server, the physical server operates a hypervisor that has the task of creating, destroying and managing the resources of a "guest". The guest is basically a virtual machine created by the host, who allocates certain resources to it. The guest system may work as virtualized, paravirtualized or it could be a hybrid version of the two. While in a virtualized environment, the guest is provided with an emulated set of hardware and is unaware whether it's strictly physical; in a paravirtualized environment, the guest is aware of the presence of the hypervisor and is interfaced directly with the host.
The overall quality of service, however, is reflected by the use of dedicated server. This kind of servers tremendously reduce downtime or in other words remove any doubts about stability all together. As per the organization's need, dedicated hosting gives the privilege to write as well as run, programming scripts & install software, as per requirement.
With VPS, web hosting becomes more affordable as compared to dedicated type. Apart from this your data is equally safe and secure and your resources such as your disk space ram and CPU is not subjected to sharing. However you might be required to share your server with other users. As far as dedicated servers are concerned, a user of such a server has a ROOT/ADMINISTRATOR ACCESS and can even sell or share his resources to someone else, as per his discretion.
So if we were to sum it up, a dedicated server is only for a single client, who may or may not choose to share his resources. The user of a dedicated has ROOT/ADMINISTRATOR access, and such users are usually those with a high usage. While a VPS user is one who went for features similar to that of a dedicated type, but has a low usage. So more or less it's the kind of usage and requirement which would play a vital role in deciding which one to go for.
