TV tonight: Grammy special; ‘Hot in Cleveland’ returns; ‘The Exes,’ ‘Teenage Daughter’ debut

Adele performs in Chicago in May. Photo credit: Chris Sweda/Chicago Tribune

Music specials and comedy premieres are generating the most attention on tonight’s schedule.

The Grammy nominations special, at 10 o’clock on CBS, should be a big night for Adele. Her “Rolling in the Deep” looks like a shoo-in for Record and Song of the Year. Other top contenders Lady Gaga, the Band Perry and Rihanna are set to perform. The other performers include Jason Aldean, Ludacris, Lupe Fiasco and Sugarland. Two other top contenders, Nicki Minaj and Katy Perry, are among the presenters. LL Cool J is the host.

Christmas in Rockefeller Center,” at 8 o’clock on NBC, has lined up a starry cast to celebrate the holiday season. The talent includes Neil Diamond, Tony Bennett, Justin Bieber, Michael Bublé, Cee Lo Green, Faith Hill, Carole King, Katharine McPhee, Javier Colon, Big Time Rush and the Radio City Rockettes. The hosts are Al Roker and Savannah Guthrie of “Today.”

If you prefer scheming instead of holiday cheer, CBS offers a new episode of “Survivor: South Pacific” at 8. If you prefer your singing turned into a competitive game, Fox counters with a 90-minute “X Factor” at 8.

TNT Mystery Movie Night” delivers its second presentation at 9: ”Ricochet” is based on Sandra Brown’s novel and stars John Corbett, Julie Benz and Gary Cole.

Comedy is making a comeback, but two newcomers tonight won’t add to the resurgence.

“I Hate My Teenage Daughter,” debuting at 9:30 on Fox, is a coarse, grating exercise. The premise: Two terrible teenagers bully their hapless mothers. The show wastes Jaime Pressly and Katie Finneran. Oh, the pain.

The Exes,” premiering at 10:30 on TV Land, is a tired variation on “The Odd Couple.” Three divorced men, who have little in common, share an apartment. Finicky Stuart (David Alan Basche) annoys playboy Phil (Donald Faison) while Haskell (Wayne Knight) delivers zingers. Too bad the show isn’t built around Kristen Johnston as a brassy divorce attorney. What a woman.

TV Land has paired “The Exes” with “Hot in Cleveland,” which starts its third season at 10 p.m. Wednesday. That series may be a variation on “The Golden Girls,” but the actresses make it sizzle. Betty White leads the way. She has fine foils in Wendie Malick, Jane Leeves and Valerie Bertinelli.

Investing in Dedicated Servers Is Necessary

Many new ideas and products are emerging in the market and customers on the other hand have become too well known with the computer products and are conscious to gain knowledge about the newer products. This computer literacy has made the minds of businessmen that they are unable to run their business without the use of computer related equipments.

This computer literacy of businessmen; whether web based or other firms, has actually given birth to the cheap dedicated servers, just to make the business related tasks easier for the businessmen in a very friendly way. These dedicated servers are tremendous machines that have power over the continuous data transmission in a very cosseted environment.

These windows dedicated servers are particularly engineered to be used in web based businesses, firms who want to secure their data transmission, database centers, commerce and auction sites, keeping the backups, and other kind of businesses. As many other specifications windows dedicated hosting permit the clients to get the windows server installed with desirable add-ons. These server solutions can help the customers extend their business by achieving the good management.

The dedicated servers which are run by Microsoft windows operating system are known as dedicated hosting. These windows based operating systems are different from other operating systems available in the market; these can be configured to make them according to the needs of the customers. These servers are based on windows 2003 and 2008 and can be upgraded anytime when new specification arrives in the market.

On the other hand Microsoft windows have made alliances with some other brand names too, and those brands are now using windows operating system but with their own specifications. Multiple protocols can be used from windows dedicated hosting, so they can be easily used in businesses like web based hosting, information transfer, database handling and much more. These windows based servers supply their customers with full-fledged software and hardware support.

dedicated server is a pack full of the hardware supplies, security patches, memory, bandwidth, control, management and dependability and is made to fully entertain their customers. The firms and other web based businesses which are vulnerable to grow choose to install windows hosting.

Specifications are something that customers should keep in mind when going to make a decision to buy windows dedicated hosting or others. Although in managed dedicated servers there are different arrangement like customization option in control panel, different domains, just one loin for several servers, fortification, memory, control and management.

It is always a hard decision to make when it comes to buying dedicated server hosting. The point usually bothers the customers is what is the difference between dedicated hosting and windows dedicated hosting. Difference is simple that in windows dedicated server Microsoft windows operating system is used while in other servers' typical operating systems are used. All of them are supplied in the market with modification in their specifications to grab the customers.

Michael Jackson: No-remorse Conrad Murray gets a tongue-lashing

In this CNN screen grab, Dr. Conrad Murray listens in court today. Photo credit: Pool/Getty Images

In sentencing Dr. Conrad Murray to four years in prison, Judge Michael Pastor ripped Michael Jackson’s physician in an electrifying display of fury today.

Oh, it was something to see.

Pastor condemned Murray’s “unacceptable, egregious” departures from medical ethics and “horrible medicine” in treating Jackson. Murray had been convicted of involuntary manslaughter in the singer’s death.

The judge declined to grant probation to Murray and described him as a danger to the community. Pastor blasted Murray’s “failure of character,” saying the doctor abandoned Jackson and treated the singer as an experiment.

There was a media angle as well: Murray’s words in a recent documentary came back to haunt him. Pastor criticized Murray for saying, in the film, that Jackson was responsible for his death.

“Talk about blaming the victim,” Pastor said. “Not only isn’t there any remorse, there is umbrage and outrage on the part of Dr. Murray against the decedent.”

What happens next to Murray?

On CNN, criminal defense attorney Richard Herman explained that the four-year sentence would be reduced immediately, under California law, to two years in county prison. Herman added that Murray is entitled to home confinement for several reasons: prison overcrowding, no criminal history and the listing of involuntary manslaughter as a nonviolent crime. County prison officials will determine Murray’s confinement, Herman added.

On CNN, legal analyst Sunny Hostin said Pastor’s “scathing, scathing” comments to Murray were something she hadn’t seen in a long time. “Quite a message sent from the bench today,” Hostin said.

Murray will probably spend months in county jail, Hostin predicted.

The sentencing was carried live on CNN, MSNBC and Fox News Channel. WKMG-Channel 6 broke in its regular schedule to carry CBS coverage.

Liminal City

By Rian Dundon

He says he’s lost his city and his society. We drive past a group of demonstrators protesting land seizures. He points out the scene and the gaggle of police cruisers nearby and grins in English “this is Chi-na”, emphasizing the play-on-words between “Chi” and “Chai” (chai, or ? being Chinese for “dismantle” or “demolish”). He sees the city’s recent prosperity through a filter of isolation, exclusion, and greed. Tells me how the doors are all closed. How peoples’ sense of self worth is determined by the number of contacts in their cell phones. How they are drifting further apart even as they become more connected. And his city is showing growing pains. The dust and traffic from construction is unbearable but it’s the gnawing of something else that gets to him. Something darker and more sinister. M. tells me I don’t understand the real China and he’s right. He speaks of death and the loss of dignity as his country develops itself into oblivion. Into a casket. He says that for every building project and commercial housing development in the city (there are hundreds) there will be a handful of laobaixing who kill themselves over having to leave their homes. Old people who can’t just up and move to the suburbs and who would have nothing there to live for if they did. And the mingong, the migrant workers who labor at these sites day and night? Just last week one plummeted to death 100 meters from his apartment. Was it in the newspaper? Never. This is blasé, everyday stuff. He asks me how can I ever understand this as a foreigner. As an American no less. How can I relate to the violence of suppression and denial that haunt this place. His country. The new culture. And how can he put faith in a society that eats itself to death, let alone the government that watches it happen. Now the city is rushing to clean its image ahead of inspections from Beijing. But what is the price of being classified as a “civilized city”? M. laughs when he thinks about his mothers crumbling public housing complex in Hexi where only the buildings visible from the bridge are being “renovated” with a coat of white paint. “What’s the point of fixing the outside when the inside is what’s rotten?”

* * *

In China’s interior provinces, where the full benefits of economic growth have yet to be realized, negotiating modernity requires hustling for a place within fresh modes of individualized experience and personal redefinition. This project traces its narrative across the diverse geographies of these liminal regions to witness how divergent notions of sex, desire, image, and identity coalesce to help shape a cultural reality not found in dominant media representations of China. Its images form a visual diary chronicling the interpersonal relationships of people living on the fringes of China’s social sphere and the vulnerability I see reflected in a generation of young people coming of age in a society set on fast-forward.

Moving beyond the urban-centric/scenic/iconic structures, which dominate the current visual record of China, this project considers the cultural dynamism of smaller provincial cities and rural prefectures far removed from China’s coastal metropoles. These marginalized spaces, borderlands of China’s rural-to-urban transformation, are a crossroads for individuals finding their own place within a fluctuating and subjective cultural (and indeed physical) landscape. If economic growth has opened new avenues for expression in China so too have resultant ideological deviations affected the way people see themselves and their place in the world. This project looks to provide visual evidence of that reality by focusing on the differentiated actualities of life in an environment of sustained cultural flux.

Rian Dundon is a photographer and masters student in Social Documentation at University of California, Santa Cruz, where he is researching and preparing a forthcoming book of photographs from interior China. His work has been featured in solo and group exhibitions at New York University, The Camera Club of New York, Angkor Photo Festival, and Caochangdi PhotoSpring. Guy Rawlings leaving WESH for Atlanta; you’ll see more of Pat Clarke

Guy Rawlings photo from the WESH website.

Prepare to say goodbye to Guy Rawlings, the sports anchor at WESH-Channel 2.

He is moving on to WGCL-TV, which bills itself as CBS Atlanta, and where he will be a news anchor, AJC.com reports.

“Guy will be here until a couple days before Christmas,” WESH news director Bob Longo said in an email tonight. “We wish him all the best in his new role in Atlanta.”

Longo said the station has begun a national search for a replacement and hopes to have it wrapped up soon. The station also will draw on longtime broadcaster Pat Clarke.

“We’re fortunate to have someone with Pat’s Central Florida experience, contacts and know-how, and you’ll certainly be seeing more of him in the weeks ahead,” Longo said.

With AJC.com, Rawlings talked about the reasons for his move. “I’m really excited and a little bit anxious,” he said. “I wanted to try something different, look for a new challenge. A lot of my friends who are sports anchors are unemployed. Local sports seems to be shrinking. This opportunity is a hybrid of news and sports. I had to jump on it!”

Rawlings, a University of Florida alum, joined WESH in 2007 and has worked in Miami, Baltimore, Charleston, S.C., Jacksonville and Gainesville.

His WESH bio reads: “In his spare time, Guy enjoys watching football — especially the Gators — basketball and playing tennis.”

‘60 Minutes’: What did you think of homeless report?

Scott Pelley delivered another first-rate report about the Central Florida homeless crisis on '60 Minutes.' Photo credit: CBS News

With Tim Tebow as an opening act, CBS tonight reminded the nation about the homeless of Central Florida.

The Denver Broncos-San Diego Chargers game pushed the start of “60 Minutes” to 7:55 p.m., nearly an hour late. Tebow, the Florida Gators legend, led the Broncos to victory in overtime. It was thrilling.

Then it was time for a bracing look at the homeless problem in our region. Scott Pelley first highlighted the problem in a much-discussed March report for the CBS newsmagazine. Pelley, the anchor of the “CBS Evening News,” was back tonight with a report on Central Florida children living in their vehicles.

Children talked about the challenges and dangers of living in vehicles. Of all the homeless families in Central Florida, two-thirds are living on the streets, Pelley reported. Another shocking fact: Of all the families without shelter in this country, one-third are in Florida, Pelley told viewers.

The report focused on the Metzger family. Arielle, 15, and Austin, 13, live in a truck with their dad, Tom, an unemployed carpenter. The children have learned to improvise, and they see their situation as an adventure. They study hard, and they participate in community theater.

The children acknowledged that they had to grow up quickly, and Arielle warned that children need to appreciate what they have, because it could be gone very quickly.

Arielle dismissed the notion that she’d be embarrassed about people learning that her family lives in a vehicle. “It’s not really that much an embarrassment. I mean, it’s only life,” Arielle said. “You do what you need to do, right?”

It was another poignant report from “60 Minutes.” Pelley has been tireless in bringing attention to the problems that families face in the Great Recession.

What did you think about tonight’s report?

If you want to help, I’ve listed links in this post.

VPS Hosting 101

VPS, which stands for virtual private server, is also known as a virtual dedicated server, or a VDS. Basically, this is a system in which parts of a computer mainframe are sectioned off into multiple servers. This would allow each section to operate as if it were a dedicated server. These parts can have their own operating systems, can be independently rebooted, and can give the appearance that they are running their own virtual machine. This practice was fairly common a few years ago, but has since gotten popular again for a couple of reasons. Mostly the development of certain virtualization software has called for a resurgence in VPS, and so it is becoming popular once again.

VPS hosting is sort of a middle ground between shared hosting and dedicated hosting. See, shared hosting is Web hosting in which many websites are stored on the same server. Dedicated hosting, however, is Web hosting in which each company can rent its own specific server. Since they are the only business on that server, they have complete control of it. This is more costly than the extra-cheap rates available for shared hosting, but it is also a lot more serious than shared hosting in terms of storage capacity, bandwidth, CPU time, Ram, and disk space.

VPS hosting is sort of in the middle. It is not shared hosting, because virtually each company is renting their own independent server. However, it is not really dedicated hosting either, because several websites might be housed on one server that is split up into several pieces. As stated before, these pieces can operate completely independently of each other, but are still in the same mainframe. So, in a way, VPS hosting gives you all of the benefits of a dedicated server (minus some of the larger resource limits) with a much cheaper cost.

Finding a company that can provide you with VPS is sort of tricky at first, but you will soon find that many of the more popular Web hosts are into this type of Web hosting. Of course, you will want to research them just as if you were looking for a shared host or even a dedicated Web host, because even VPS is not entirely fool-proof. With any luck though, a VPS can help you to bridge that gap. It can get you out of a shared server until you are ready to make the leap to a dedicated server.
